Baron sold to Mexican Olympic rider Berna Pjuals
20th February 2013

Well it seems that the news is out, so yes we can confirm that we have sold our wonderful stallion Baron de Ley to Mexican Olympic rider Berna Pujals. Berna has purchased Baron with a view to producing him as her 2016 ride for Rio. We know a lot can happen over the next few years but we are delighted that Baron will have this opportunity, and are really excited about his future with Berna. We were lucky enough to watch Berna in Hong Kong at the 2008 Olympics with her fabulous horse Vincent, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that we can have a trip to Rio to watch her and Baron! We have agreed with Berna to be able to breed from Baron in the future and we are very excited about that prospects as it has always been one of our aims for him.

Ice Age is an Olympic Torch Bearer
12th July 2012

We are so proud that Ice Age was an Olympic Torch Bearer through the streets of Shaftesbury with Grand Prix rider Hannah Biggs. He behaved impeccably and wasn't phased by the crowds, flags or even the brass band. We bet that he thought they were all there for him!

St. Pr. Lavirca makes it a double!
09th May 2012

Born within a week of each other St. Pr. Lavirca has produced two stunning black colts. Dynamite Sc who is by Dimaggio and was carried by a surrogate, and Ulysses SC who is by the fabulous Uthopia who recently set a new British record at Grand Prix.

Our first two foals of 2012
29th March 2012

Our first two foals of 2012 have arrived! Farenheit is a gorgeous bay colt by the exciting young stallion Foundation out our fabulous Weltmeyer mare Wiesenburg. Following hot on Farenheit's heels was Finesse, a beautiful dark filly by Foundation's father Fidertanz. Finesse's mother is the Ster mare Tiara who is by Metall (father of Carl Hetser's wonderful partner Uthopia). Upon doing her foal check, our vet pronounced Finesse the best foal he has seen so far this year!

A wild weekend at Your Horse Live!
14th November 2011

What a fabulous weekend at Your Horse Live. Ice Age and Dreamgirl were just awesome and coped admirably with the crowds, the noise, the lights and even the odd stunt rider or two. Anna's displays went down a storm and we couldn't have been prouder of our lovely horses.

Berita and Brewarrina have a great write up in Horse & Hound
14th October 2011

'Sparsholt is now Anna Ross Davies' local show and her rider Robert Waine, made a great impression with three young mares. He won the prelim classes on Brewarrina SC, and came first and second with Berita SC and Union Grace respectively in the novice classes. It was the first ever show for Brewarrina, who, like Berita, is owned by Southern Cross Stud. The four year old by Benvenuto was unphased despite being dive-bombed by a pigeon in her test. "We actually just brought her for a try out." said a thrilled Anna, who confessed Brewarrina is her favourite four-year-old. Six-year-old Berita (Breitling x Regazzoni), who is expecting an embryo transfer foal by Uthopia in 2012, has just started her competitive career and has yet to score below 70%. "They all behaved like trekking ponies and went like champions." said Anna.

Berringar selected for the Oldenburg Stallion Licensing!
12th October 2011

Our wonderful two year old colt Berringar has been selected for the 2011 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing! We are absolutely delighted and very proud of him. Huge thanks to Marco Phillip for all his hard work in preparing him.

First time outings, several wins and some fabulous scores!
02nd October 2011

Lovely Brewarrina had her competition debut and won both her classes, scoring 72% and a 9, what a cool cucumber! Not to be outdone by a young upstart Berita won her class on a whopping 76%, she was a little tired by the heat in her second class but still managed a very respectable 70%. A week later and Rob and Berita were back in action at Patchetts along with Ice Age ridden by Beth. Between them they all managed to qualify for the Winter regional finals in all 3 of their classes with some more outstanding scores. Well done everyone, fantastic work!

Premiums all round!
07th September 2011

We hosted our first studbook inspection with Dr Karsten Kühl and Lois Allard from the Oldenburg Verband yesterday and are delighted to report that all foals received the coveted foal premium! Byzantine was particularly praised and it was recommended that we keep him entire as a future stallion prospect. In addition to that wonderful news all the mares we presented were successfully graded into the head studbook. Karsten and Lois were extremely complimentary on the quality of our mares and gave us great advice for future breeding plans. This was the first time we had presented our UK born foals for inspection so it was fantastic that they were all awarded premiums. We had a wonderful day despite the gale force winds and torrential rain and are already looking forward to next year!

Two Uthopia foals due next year.
04th August 2011

We are delighted to announce that we are expecting two foals by the exciting Grand Prix stallion Uthopia in 2012. One from St Pr Lavirca and one via embro transfer from Berita. Uthopia has recently been selected to represent Great Britian at the European Championships with his rider Carl Hester and we wish them both the best of luck. Despite it only being his first season at Grand Prix Uthopia has already made quite an impression recently winning the WDM Grand Prix at Hickstead CDI on over 80%!

Berita goes undefeated!
24th June 2011

Berita has managed to win all four classes she entered over the last two days with every score being over 70% with four different judges! If that wasn't enough to impress she is currently starring as this moth's cover girl for Hprse magazine. Well done Berita!

Spectacular new broodmare
08th June 2011

We are thrilled to introduce our new broodmare Blue Hors Silvia. Known at home as "Loppy", this amazing mare trained up to Grand Prix with International rider Emile Faurie and went on to become a successful Young Rider's horse being best of British at two European Championships with Lara Griffith. She is by the stallion Blue Hors Silvermoon, sire of the phenomenal Blue Hors Matine. We are so excited to have this beautiful mare to breed from and can't wait to see what she produces.

Welcome Bellatrix SC!
06th June 2011

Barracuda produced a sensational dark bay filly last night. Bellatrix is absolutely beautiful and is proving to be friendly and inquisitive already.

Baron does it again!
28th May 2011

Our wonderful 6 year old stallion Baron de Ley has secured his ticket to this year's Bundeschampionships by winning his class on the convincing score of 8.3! Congratulations to Brigitte and all the team at the Wittigs' training yard. The photo shows Baron competing in last year's finals of the Bundeschampionships.

Two more colts!
26th May 2011

You wait 11 months for a foal and two come along at once! Zananke and Linguistic (via embryo transfer) have produced the most gorgeous colt foals. Despite both being bay colts, at a few days old they are like chalk and cheese. Zananke's colt Byzantine is a strapping dark bay colt by the proven Grand Prix sire Breitling W, he is tall, stocky and charismatic and Zananke is pleased as punch with him. Peridot by the exciting up and coming garnd Prix stallion Peron out of Linguistic. He is smaller than Byzantine and is a refined and elegant foal with a super friendly personality. His "surrogate" mother Rumour who carried him to allow Linguistic to begin her competitive career is proving to be a very relaxed mum and this seems to have rubbed off on Peridot.

Foal number 3 of 2011 is here!
11th May 2011

Brindabella has produced an amazing chestnut colt by the stallion Boston!

Lavirca has a filly!
24th April 2011

Our beautiful State Premium mare Lavirca has has a divine filly. She is very tall and elegant and is already displaying a sweet and friendly nature. At the moment she is dark bay like her father United but we are waiting to see if any grey speckles appear! Lavirca is proving to be an excellent mother and seems to enjoy having her baby around.

Mio Weltamore placed at the Winter Dressage Championships!
18th April 2011

We are delighted to report that despite a mistake at the start of his test Mio Weltamore finished 7th on a score of 69% at the Winter Dressage Championships. It was his first time at the championships so quite an achievement. Well done to all those who were placed.

Our first foal of 2011 is a cracker!
23rd March 2011

Once again Wiesenburg has come up with the goods! She has got 2011 off to a great start by producing a stunning colt foal who is a full brother to the lovely Blossom. Our newest edition is a chestnut colt by Breitling W.

Great scores at the Regional Championships!
09th February 2011

Both Ice Age and Mio Weltamore were third in their classes at the Regional Championships held at Patchetts Equestrian Centre. Rupert did a great job with both horses at his first Regional Championships scoring 70.88% with Ice Age and 73.17% with Mio Weltamore in two hotly contested classes.

More competition success for Southern Cross Stud!
27th November 2010

Well it has been a busy few weeks trying to secure qualifications for the regional championships for the older horses and get some experience in front of judges for some of the younger ones. Mio Weltamore, Marengo, Ice Age and Deux Valles are all qualified for the regionals at various levels up to and including Prix St George so we are going to have a busy February I think. Between them they have won almost every class entered and have earned some outstanding scores and comments from the judges. Berita has had a few outings to new venues and has travelled and behaved impeccably throughout, even coping well with extremely busy warms up arenas and loud music on the PA system. She has notched up more fabulous results scoring well into the 70s and winning at Elementary which is a new level for her as well as scoring some 9's! Another youngster Wangelis had his first ever outing today and was a star. We were very proud of how he handled a new environment and being around lots of new horses in the warm up, we are just waiting to hear how he did as it was a very big class.

More fantastic results!
27th October 2010

Another great day with two more wins for Deux Valles and Mio Weltamore, the former securing his qualification for the Winter Regional Championships. We were delighted with how the boys coped with a new venue and were very pleased with their performances and the comments they attracted from the judges.

22nd October 2010

Southern Cross Stud has a monthly blog on Horse Breeders Magazine where you can follow what is happening with the stud each month. Two wins and some 9's!
19th October 2010

Following on from our successful first attempt at dressage to music last week, Marengo and Mio Weltamore won both their classes today and both scored 9's! Marengo for his walk and Mio Weltamore for his medium trot. The horses attracted positive comments both from the judge and spectators and Mio Weltamore has secured another qualification for the winter regional championships.

Baron makes it to the finals of the Bundeschampionate
05th September 2010

We were thrilled that Baron was able to sail through to the final round of the prestigious Bundeschampionate, especially as it was only his third competition. Although he was a little tense in the ring and made a couple of mistakes, overall we were delighted with his performance. He looked outstanding in the warm up and attracted a lot of attention. We were very proud to have him in the final representing our stud and are hugely grateful to Brigitte and Wolfram for all their hard work to get him there.

A fantastic day at the BEF Futurity!
25th August 2010

What a great day! All of the girls were fantastic and we were delighted with their scores and feedback. Drambuie scored a first premium and was praised for her uphill conformation and good quality and her trot was described as having good elasticity and expression. Caledonia scored a whopping 8.8 which gave her a higher first premium and the reserve high score of the day! She scored 9's for the veterinary mark, her canter which was described as very athletic and her attitude for dressage which the Evaluator said was "very good, showing presence and personality". Linguistic was also awarded a higher first premium and was the highest scoring 3 year old! The Evaluator described her frame as "a very nice picture" and she scored 9's for her trot and canter which was described as "very athletic and agile". Further photographs from the day can be found at www.greenlees-equine.com under the Writtle College Futurity gallery. Drambuie was number 3, Caledonia number 8 and Linguistic number 66.

Exciting weekend
19th July 2010

We had a great time at the Shearwater Young Dressage Horse finals held at Hartpury. Both Berita and Bobbi Dazzler gave great performances under the expert guidance of Tim Sillevis. This was particularly pleasing as Tim had only had the girls for two weeks so had been unable to conduct his usual preparations. Whilst we were away at Hartpury our newest addition to the Southern Cross Stud herd arrived. Lavirca is a gorgeous grey State Premium mare by the Grand Prix stallion Royal Diamond out of a full sister to the mother of the legendary Sandro Hit. She is currently in foal to United who achieved the highest grade ever awarded in his stallion performance test in the Netherlands. We are so excited to have a mare of this calibre join us and can't wait to see what she produces.

Barracuda makes it a hatrick
17th June 2010

Barracuda has made it a hatrick of fillies by producing a gorgeous girl by the stallion Don Ricoss. Drambuie is already showing outstanding movement and has a wonderful relaxed nature, she is interested in exploring everything new but is gentle and attentive. We are very pleased with her and look forward to hearing comments from the evaluators at the BEF Futurity later in the year.

Dreamgirls's successful mare grading
10th June 2010

Dreamgirl attended the Hannoverian mare grading and got excellent marks including 8's for her trot and canter. She was awarded another 8 from the test rider who remarked on her easy and consistent contact. We were very happy with her performance and are glad that she has added another string to her bow.

Another filly!
09th May 2010

We are excited to announce the arrival of Caledonia, a pretty bay filly by Connery out of Riviera. She is already proving to be very bold just like her mother and is having fun investigating her surroundings.

Our first foal of 2010 arrives safely
16th April 2010

We were very pleased to receive the news from Germany that Ichiban (meaning first or number one in Japanese) arrived safely on Friday 16th April. She is a stunning bay filly by the Bunschampion and Vice World Champion Imperio, out of the enchanting Brindabella. She is not only our first foal of the year, but Brindabella’s first foal too so she really is our Ichiban.

Thrilled that our horses have qualified for the Shearwater Young Dressage Horse finals
08th April 2010

We were thrilled with our horses Berita and Bobbi Dazzler who were first and second in the prestigious Shearwater Young Dressage Horse classes held at Stilebridge Barn on Monday 5th April. They both behaved impeccably at only their second ever competiton and achieved excellent scores and comments from the judges. They were beautifully ridden by Paul Taylor Johns who is an eventer, so it was his first time in a young horse class as well! The result was a particular achievement for Berita, who won her class convincingly, despite being a year behind in her training having bred a stunning foal. The first picture shows the lovely Berita who won her class with ease and the second picture is of Bobbi Dazzler, we particularly like the smiling judge shown in the background.

Success on a debut outing
18th March 2010

March 2010 We were delighted with our three young horses Bobbi Dazzler, Berita and Zananke along with their intrepid rider Paul Taylor Johns on their first outing. The girls, having only been backed in the Autumn, all put in very good performances and got great feedback on their test sheets. All three girls were placed with Bobbi and Berita coming first and second on scores of 70 and 69%! Zananke started well but was accosted by the horse eating plant pots and had a few wobbles, she still managed to gain 6th place so all in all we were extremely pleased with their first time away from home.
